Aquaphor Healing Ointment

I keep a jar of this in the bathroom cabinet because it is the kind of product that ends up getting used for a lot more than you expect. Dry hands, cracked knuckles, rough elbows, a little patch of irritated skin that needs to calm down, even the kind of small scrape or burn that just feels better with a thick protective layer on it. It is the sort of thing I would recommend to anyone who wants one simple ointment that can do a few jobs without making a big fuss about it.
What I like most is that it stays where you put it. Some lotions disappear too fast when your skin is really dry, and then you are back to square one an hour later. This has that heavier, protective feel that actually hangs around and gives your skin a chance to settle. I use a small amount at a time because you do not need much. A little goes further than you think, and that makes the value of the bigger jar easier to understand. It works well as a spot treatment on the rougher areas, but I also use it as a body moisturizer on the places that get especially dry in colder weather.
It is especially useful for people who work with their hands, wash them a lot, or spend a lot of time in dry air. If your skin gets cranky from soap, weather, or constant wiping and washing, this is the kind of ointment that makes sense to keep close by. I would also hand it to someone who wants one product they can use at the sink, in the bedroom, or in a travel bag without thinking too hard about it.
The one downside is the texture. It is thick and a little messy, so this is not the thing I would reach for when I need to get dressed fast and run out the door. You have to let it sink in or at least give it a minute before touching fabric, and if you use too much it can feel greasy for a bit. That is part of the tradeoff with this kind of ointment, though. It is doing the job because it sits on the skin instead of vanishing.
I reach for it most often after washing my hands a few times in a row or when I notice a dry patch that regular lotion is not fixing fast enough. It is also one of those products that lives on the shelf for a while and then suddenly gets used every day for a week because the weather changes or your skin just decides to act up. I like having it around for that reason. It is not fancy, and it does not need to be. It just solves the problem it is meant to solve.
If you want something light and scented and barely noticeable, this is probably not the jar for you. If you want a basic ointment that can protect dry skin, calm rough spots, and help out with minor skin annoyances without making a production of it, this is worth keeping in the house. I trust products like this more when they are plain and direct, and this one is exactly that.
